Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) was inaugurated on November 24, 1969, at Amritsar, Punjab, in honour of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru. It is both a residential and affiliating university with a 500-acre campus with 45 teaching departments, regional campuses, and more than 170 affiliated colleges, which serve rural and semi-urban populations to advance educational equity.
GNDU is characterized by the universal principles of truthfulness, compassion, tolerance, and humanity, which are based on the teachings of Guru Nanak. The university also provides a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in science, arts, management, law, IT and environmental studies. GNDU is either an accredited institution with an A++ grade as indicated by NAAC and a University with Potential of Excellence as declared by UGC, meaning that its academic framework links to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It is now enrolling over 20,000 students with the focus being on inclusivity, innovation, and research excellence.
The GNDU admission process is conducted online through the official university portal.
The admissions to undergraduate programs are mainly based on merit, and at least 50% of marks on the 10+2 examination are required among the general candidates and 45% among the reserved ones.
MBA admission through GMET or departmental level through an entrance test or B. B.Tech admission is based on JEE Main scores.
The sessions of counselling and verification of documents take place after the publication of the entrance or merit results.
Diploma programs, certificate programs and distance education programs could be provided with direct admission on a merit basis with no entrance test.
The GNDU admission process typically begins in late May and continues until mid to late September each year. Students are advised to submit applications before the closing date, usually between September 25 and 30, 2025. The university releases detailed notifications regarding the admission timeline and counselling schedule on its official website.
The GNDU entrance exam is considered to have a moderate difficulty level. It generally includes objective-type questions on general knowledge, English language, quantitative aptitude, and subject-specific topics. With proper preparation—especially by reviewing previous year question papers and practicing mock tests—students can perform well in the exam.
The minimum percentage required for GNDU admission is 50% in the qualifying examination for general category students and 45% for reserved category candidates. However, eligibility criteria may vary depending on the specific course or department. Professional programs like MBA, M.Tech, and Law may require additional qualifications or entrance test scores.
Admittedly, admission to GNDU is possible in some of its programs (e.g., diploma, certificate, distance learning) without an entrance exam. Such admissions are allowed and solely on a merit basis, which is based on marks received in the qualifying examination. Nonetheless, the majority of normal bachelor's and post-graduate degrees, in particular in management, law and engineering, demand candidates to pass entrance tests or be selected based on their merit.
Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) is a leading higher education institution that has been characterized by excellence in academic achievements, social inclusiveness, and innovative research. This is because of its open online admissions system, variety of academic programs, and national accreditations. It is ranked among the best universities in Punjab, where students wanting to take professional and academic courses can go.
