No, the Common Management Admission Test(CMAT) is not compulsory for all MBA programs.
Yes, CMAT is generally easier than CAT, even though both exams have a similar syllabus. CMAT includes additional sections-General Awareness and Innovation & Entrepreneurship. The overall question difficulty is lower. While CAT is known for its tricky and high-level questions, especially in Quant and VA, CMAT tends to have more straightforward questions and is less time-pressured. That's why many students find CMAT more manageable, especially if they're targeting AICTE-approved B-schools rather than the competitive IIMs.
Popular B schools accepting CMAT scores include:
  • JBIMS Mumbai
  • KJ Somaiya Institute of Management
  • Great Lakes Institute of Management
  • PUMBA Pune
  • GIM Goa
  • XISS Ranchi and approximately 1000+ AICTE-approved institutions as well.
The expected fee as per the CMAT 2025 is:
  • 2000 for the general category
  • 1000 for SC/ST/PwD/Female Candidates

This might change after the 2026 notification.
