90% and above is considered good; however, this percentile is insufficient for getting admission in premium colleges like IIMs, XLRI, FMS Delhi, SPJIMR Mumbai, and MDI Gurgaon.
To take admission in the old IIMs and other elite colleges, you need to have 99 % or above.
90% to 95 % is considered a very good percentage, as it makes you eligible to get admission in A-class institutes and newer IIMs.
70% is a moderate percentage and sufficient to take admission in good colleges, while above 90% is considered a good percentage.
70% is not enough to get into the top-tier institutes like IIMs, but you can still get admission in tier-2 or tier-3 B-schools like Amity University, BIMTECH, Christ University, or NDIM.
While a good CAT score is crucial, it's just one of many factors, and its weightage is balanced with other components like academic background, work experience, and performance in the written ability test and personal interview.
A CAT score weighs around 20 to 56 % in comparison to other admission criteria like GD and PI. It is the very initial criterion to filter the candidates according to their final composite score.
70% to 80% is a competitive percentage, and you may get admission to a good college, even into newer IIMs like IIM Jammu, IIM Sirmaur, or IIM Nagpur. These colleges offer decent placements and learning experiences.
A CAT score in the 70 to 80 percentile range can secure admission to reputable Tier-2 and Tier-3 private B-schools and some state universities across India, offering various MBA specializations.
Tier-2-3 management institutes are open to take admission at this percentile, and they offer Affordable fees, Industry exposure, Smaller competition, Personalized attention, Skill-based learning, and Diverse opportunities.
These colleges also provide a Good ROI (Return on Investment) as they offer decent placements that justify the overall cost.
Mostly Tier-2 colleges are very competitive for their ranking and want to be number one, so they keep an eagle eye on placements. Therefore, they focus on practical, job-ready skills rather than just theory. This helps you get better job opportunities even at this percentile.
However, the older IIMs and other Top institutes don't consider the candidate who has a percentage below 85%.
These are the list of institutions that accept admission at this percentage:
IIMs (Jammu, Nagpur, Sirmaur, etc.)
BIMTECH (Birla Institute of Management Technology), Greater Noida
IFMR GSB (Institute of Financial Management and Research) at KREA University, Sri City
XIME (Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship), Bangalore
Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida/Lucknow
Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon
JIMS (Jagan Institute of Management Studies), Delhi
IBS (ICFAI Business School), Hyderabad
IMT (Institute of Management Technology), Nagpur
KIIT School of Management
While the CAT score is important, colleges that accept this range also look at other parts of your profile. They consider your academic record, work experience, and how you perform in the Group Discussion, Written Ability Test, and Personal Interview. Extracurricular activities and diversity are also taken into account. It’s a good idea to research different colleges and apply to several to increase your chances of getting admission.
After getting the CAT score, you must go through several other selection stages used by most MBA colleges and IIMs. These include:
Written Ability Test (WAT): A short essay or written test to assess writing, analytical, and communication skills.
Group Discussion (GD): Evaluates teamwork, leadership, confidence, and clarity of thought.
Personal Interview (PI): Tests personality, goals, motivation, and overall suitability for management studies.
Academic Record: Considers performance in 10th, 12th, and graduation.
Work Experience (if any): Adds value to the profile and can boost overall selection chances.
Extracurricular Activities: Participation in sports, volunteering, or leadership roles helps create a well-rounded profile
