The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the undergraduate MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic session, confirming a massive addition of 9,911 new MBBS seats. This expansion brings the country's total undergraduate medical capacity to 1,36,939 seats across 823 medical colleges.
Issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), this updated blueprint excludes Institutes of National Importance (INIs) like AIIMS and JIPMER, which are managed independently. Students can view and download the official PDF directly from the National Medical Commission Portal.
The expansion highlights an increased capacity driven heavily by private sector growth alongside crucial public health infrastructure updates:
Total Available Capacity: 1,36,939 MBBS seats.
Renewed Existing Seats: 1,27,028 seats.
Newly Approved Seats: 9,911 seats.
Government Sector Pool: 63,296 seats across 441 colleges (includes 2,111 new seats).
Private & Deemed Pool: 73,643 seats across 382 colleges (includes 7,800 new seats).
The growth includes the establishment of 25 brand-new medical colleges contributing 2,400 seats to the new pool.
Government Expansion: 7 new Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) opening 400 seats.
Private Expansion: 18 new private institutions opening 2,000 seats.
Capacity Hikes: The remaining 7,511 new seats come from capacity hikes in existing medical colleges, facilitated by relaxed rules in the Graduate Medical Education Regulations.
The state-wise seat allocations will significantly shape candidate preferences during the upcoming Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and state-level registration rounds.

To secure these allocations, the MARB has mandated a strict seven-day deadline (by July 21, 2026) for all approved private medical colleges to submit an Electronic Bank Guarantee (E-Bank Guarantee). Formal Letters of Permission (LoP) will only be issued upon validation of these guarantees. Furthermore, the NMC has sternly warned institutions that admitting students beyond their officially sanctioned numbers will count as a direct legal violation, risking immediate penal action.
This significant capacity expansion is widely expected to ease cutoff scores across several states, providing major relief to high-stakes NEET UG candidates.
