IIT Madras Announces GATE 2027 Schedule & New Robotics Paper

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), the organizing institute for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027, has formally announced the comprehensive examination schedule alongside groundbreaking structural changes.

The national-level, computer-based assessment is slated to take place over three consecutive weekends in February 2027. In a bid to align the examination with evolving global technological landscapes, IIT Madras has introduced a dedicated paper for Robotics and Automation, alongside the first comprehensive syllabus overhaul in five years.

Key Dates and Registration Timeline

The online registration portal via the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) is scheduled to go live in mid-August. Aspirants can track the critical timelines below:

• August 14, 2026: Online Registration Portal Opens

• September 21, 2026: Regular Application Deadline (No Late Fee)

• September 30, 2026: Extended Application Deadline (With Late Fee)

• October 14-21, 2026: Application Correction Window

• January 4, 2027: Examination City Allocation Notification

• February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, & 21, 2027: GATE 2027 Examination Dates

• March 19, 2027: Official Declaration of Results

Introduction of Robotics & Automation (RA) Paper

To address the surging industrial demand for automation, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing, IIT Madras has launched the Robotics and Automation (RA) paper. This addition increases the total number of GATE test subjects to 30.

The 100-mark RA paper features an interdisciplinary layout designed to accommodate diverse engineering backgrounds:

• General Aptitude: 15 marks (Mandatory)

• Part A (Core Robotics & Automation): 60 marks (Mandatory section covering kinematics, dynamics, control systems, and vision computing).

• Part B (Specialized Elective): 25 marks. Candidates can choose either Section B1 (Electrical Engineering) or Section B2 (Mechanical Engineering) at the time of the exam.

Syllabus Overhaul and Structural Reforms

Beyond the new paper, IIT Madras has executed a significant restructuring of existing disciplines:

• Five-Year Syllabus Revision: Core syllabi across multiple engineering streams have been updated to phase out obsolete concepts and introduce modern industry-relevant frameworks.

• Textile Engineering Restructuring: The independent Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper has been discontinued. The subject is now integrated as a sectional elective under the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper umbrella.

• Enhanced Security Measures: The registration and entry protocols will now feature biometric live facial authentication linked with DigiLocker verification to curb impersonation.
