According to the annual director’s report presented by IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti, the Zanzibar institution has rapidly transformed into a vital hub for engineering excellence in East Africa.
The international campus currently hosts 130 students, drawing a diverse pool with 51% from Tanzania and the remaining half from Kenya, Uganda, India, Ethiopia, and Zambia. Demands for these globally recognised tech programs led the institute to announce an aggressive enrollment expansion plan targeting 350 to 500 students by 2027.
Growth strategies will be fueled by accelerated global faculty recruitment, infrastructure enhancements, and the launch of East Africa's first research-backed Startup Studio.
Validating the international campus's academic rigour, the premier graduating MTech batch logged a 100% job placement rate. Graduates successfully transitioned into key engineering roles within prominent regional telecom, technology, and manufacturing giants, including:
Airtel
Zantel
SuperDoll
Highlighting the entrepreneurial landscape at the domestic front, IIT Madras Board of Governors Chairman Dr Pawan Goenka added that the institute's ecosystem has incubated over 560 startups, collectively valued at an astonishing INR 74,000 crore.
