Delhi University (DU) has approved a direct PhD pathway for students completing its Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). Eligible graduates can now apply for doctoral programmes directly after their bachelor's degree, bypassing the traditional prerequisite of a master's degree.
This structural change, ratified by DU’s Academic Council and Executive Council, amends Ordinance VI to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines.
The updated eligibility criteria, structural timeline, and background of the cohort outline the core updates of this rollout:
The direct admission pathway relies heavily on a student's Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) at the end of their fourth year: [3, 6]
General Category: Students must secure a minimum score of 7.5 CGPA.
SC / ST / Reserved Categories: Students receive a relaxation, requiring a minimum of 7.0 CGPA.
Academic Session: This direct admission provision is initially introduced as a special measure specifically for the 2026-27 academic session.
The policy specifically targets DU's inaugural FYUP batch:
Inception: The first FYUP batch enrolled during the 2022–23 academic session with 75,948 initial admissions.
Third-Year Exit: A total of 40,005 students chose to exit the programme after three years in 2025, receiving standard undergraduate degrees.
Fourth-Year Retention: Approximately 35,943 students continued into the fourth year. They are graduating in 2026, making them eligible for the newly announced 2026–27 direct PhD cycle.
The fourth year of the FYUP focuses on transitioning students from standard coursework to independent, advanced academia:
Research Integration: The final year requires students to take up dedicated academic project tracks, identify real-time problems, and deliver formal research outcomes.
Alternative Options: Students who do not meet the direct PhD eligibility criteria or choose not to apply can still opt for DU's standard one-year or two-year postgraduate degree programmes before applying for a PhD later.
