1. Academically Proven
The Berhampur University owns 22 departments or Centres situated in a rural and serene setting with a well forested 250 Acre campus in Rangeilunda, named as Bhanjabihar after the poet KabiSamrat Upendra Bhanja, of the 17th Century, supplementing more than 180 affiliated colleges covering 7 districts in South Odisha, which are Ganjam, Phulbani, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Boudh, and Jeypore.
Its curriculum is designed in line with UGC guidelines and updated as per the demands of modern education. Berhampur University grants academic degrees to 25000+ students each and every year.
2. Accreditation - NAAC Status
The status of accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is a significant marker of institutional quality in India. Berhampur University has participated in NAAC cycles before; previously, it had an A grade, though NAAC grading designations can change each cycle. Berhampur University is now listed in various national ranking frameworks. In the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) listings for State Public Universities, it is listed in the 51-100 band for 2024.
3. History and establishment
Berhampur University was established on 2 January 1967 under the Odisha Act 21 of 1966 to provide a higher education experience to the southern part of Odisha, in response to the need to establish a regional higher educational centre that could also administer its affiliated colleges and undertake postgraduate and research programmes. The university has fulfilled the aspirations of the largely agrarian, tribal, and business-oriented people around and beyond, and catered to their higher education needs for well over 50 years.
4. Campus, location, and Infrastructure
Berhampur University is located on a site on the outskirts of Berhampur (spelled Brahmapur) that is situated on more than 250 acres. The campus is semi-urban with substantial green campus areas. Over the years, its campus infrastructure, including academic blocks, science departments, hostel facilities, a central library, and sports facilities, has been developed strategically.
Very recently, the state government approved funding for infrastructure improvements to develop additional hostels, a new science block, and an auditorium, which demonstrates the state government's commitment to establishing and upgrading its investment in the campus over time.
5. Jurisdiction and affiliated colleges
Traditionally, Berhampur University managed a large geography that included many southern Odisha districts, as well as over a hundred affiliated colleges that offered undergraduate and some postgraduate education programs.
6. Staff, research, and collaboration
Berhampur University has a cadre of elder faculty alongside younger professionals in most departments. Research activity and collaborations are often defined by department-level engagement: departments in the sciences with labs and external funding sources are much more likely to submit and publish research, while some arts and social science departments are engaged in regional study or cultural study.
It has a central library with thousands of books, journals, and digital resources. Laboratories are well-equipped for science and research-based courses; nevertheless, some students feel modernization is needed in certain departments.
7. Student life, hostels, and safety
The university has on-campus hostels available to male and female students, although demand typically outstrips supply – this is a standard experience at many state universities in growing urban areas. Recent media have identified the expansion of hostel capacity as well as focused financial resources to improve living conditions for students. Student life at the university is good, including cultural events, sports, student unions, and engagement with the local community.
Conclusion: Berhampur University is a good government college. With respectable accreditation and national recognition in ranking bands, it provides quality public higher education at regulated fee levels. Historically, Berhampur University administered a broad geographical region throughout several districts in southern Odisha. It had jurisdiction over more than a hundred affiliated colleges offering undergraduate and some postgraduate programs.
