The idea to start a university in Lucknow was first raised by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, Khan Bahadur, K.C.I.E. from Mahmudabad, who contributed an article to "The Pioneer" columns urging the founding of a University in Lucknow.

Lucknow University takes admission in 2 modes i.e. Online and Offline. Admission to various courses is based on merit, entrance examination, and aptitude test, followed by GD and PI cycles.
At the UG level, the university offers a three-year BSc in four majors, BCA, BA, BBA, BFA, BCom, BCom (Hons), BA (Hons) in 34 majors, BPEd, BVA, BVoc and BTech (Lateral) Classes, a two-year BEd, five-year integrated courses such as BA LLB, BBA MBA, and a four-year BTech course.
At the PG level, the university offers two-year MA, MSc, MBA, MPH, MEd, LLM, MCA, MHA, MCom, MPA, MPEd, and MSW courses.
The university offers students doctoral and diploma courses of three to six years.
