The Ministry announced that Mumbai will host the most FHEI campuses, with 6 locations planned. Bengaluru is next, with two campuses. Gurugram, Delhi NCR, Greater Noida, and Chennai will each have one campus.
The Education Minister, Sukanata Majumdar, told the Lok Sabha that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a Letter of Intent (LOT) to 12 foreign universities to establish campuses in India.
Majumdar said in a written response that the UGC is reviewing applications from two or more foreign Higher educational institutions (FHEIs). The Education Minister stated that the approved campuses of FHEIs will operate under the UGC regulation of 2023.
The Minister said that Deakin University and the University of Wollongong from Australia, Queen’s University of Belfast from Ireland, and Coventry University in the UK are registered under the FDSCA to create campuses in GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
The ministry noted that the IFSCA is still reviewing one application. The ministry statement mentioned that UGC rules define a campus as one established in India, and the FHEI can choose the location.
