UGC has announced the UGC-BSR Faculty Fellowship Scheme for senior faculty members. This fellowship is only for the Science and Technology faculty who are nearing superannuation.
The scheme aims to retain experienced researchers in mentorship roles to guide young PhD scholars. This fellowship will extend the 3 years of their service after retirement.
The official website to apply is the UGC Basic Science Research (BSR) Bureau.
Fellowship Amount: INR 50,000 per month (in addition to pension and other retirement benefits).
Research Grant: INR 5,00,000 per annum.
Tenure: 3 years or until the age of 68 years, whichever is earlier.
Utilisation: The research grant covers minor equipment (computers/laptops), chemicals, consumables, and domestic travel, but cannot be used for international travel or furniture
To be eligible for the 2026 cycle, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Designation: Must be a Reader, Associate Professor, or Professor in a Science and Technology department of a recognised university.
Ph.D. Supervision: Must have successfully supervised at least 15 PhD dissertations in Basic Sciences or 10 in Engineering and Technology.
Publication Record: A cumulative impact factor of published papers greater than 50.
Research Experience: Handled at least 3 sponsored research projects as Principal Investigator in the last 10 years.
Timeline: Applications must be submitted within one year of the date of superannuation
The UGC-BSR Faculty Fellowship Scheme follows a rolling application cycle rather than a fixed annual deadline. There is no fixed last date for the scheme. Candidates must submit their application within one year of their date of superannuation (retirement).
