The University Grants Commission (UGC) has rejected the online and distance mode of learning for all medical and allied health science courses from the academic session 2025-26 onwards. According to the UGC, such courses should be conducted only in the regular, on-campus mode as the students require lab work, clinical practice, and hands-on training.

What the ban has covered?

The ban covers only those areas of education where a practice or clinical training is necessary, e.g.:

  • Nursing

  • Physiotherapy

  • Medical Lab Technology

  • Radiology

  • Courses related to Pharmacy

  • Public Health

Any kind of allied health science programmes. The commission has stated that no skill can be transferred through online or distance mode which is a must for the healthcare sector.

The UGC has instructed the universities to stop admitting new students into these programs. And warned them that running banned programs could result in a loss of recognition.
