The Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) released the notification for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) 2026. Aspiring scientists can now apply for 26 Research Scholar positions to pursue doctoral research in atmospheric and space sciences. The vacancies are under the Department of Science and Technology.

Selected scholars will engage in high-impact research areas, including Geomagnetism, Space Weather, Upper Atmospheric Physics, and Solid Earth Geomagnetism.

PhD in Space Physics India: Eligibility and Requirements

The Junior Research Fellowship 2026 focuses on Space Weather and Upper Atmosphere. The 2026 recruitment drive seeks motivated candidates to join IIG’s premier research facilities in Navi Mumbai, Tirunelveli (EGRL), and Prayagraj (KSKGRL). To be eligible for the IIG JRF 2026, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: M.Sc. or M.Sc. (Tech.) in Physics, Geophysics, Space Physics, or Applied Mathematics with at least 60% marks.

  • Background: Candidates must have studied Physics or Mathematics during their B.Sc.

  • Age Limit: Applicants should not exceed 27 years as of July 1, 2026 (standard government relaxations apply).

  • Final Year Students: Those awaiting results by August 2026 are encouraged to apply.

The Selection and Application Process begins with the IIG Entrance Exam 2026, followed by a personal interview for shortlisted candidates. The application fee is a nominal INR 100.  Candidates can apply online for the IG Navi Mumbai JRF.
