The Gujarat University (GU) in Ahmedabad has declared the results of its PhD entrance examination 2025. Out of 1,317 candidates who took the test, only 214 managed to secure the minimum 50% qualifying marks. That number includes 177 candidates from the open category, while 37 candidates qualified under the reserved categories.
More than 500 aspirants who passed the National Eligibility Test (NET) skipped the entrance exam. Because these candidates are directly eligible for PhD admission at GU. It will help better the chances of filling the available seats.
University officials say they are offering around 700 PhD seats this year. And the final admission process will proceed after the Research Development Committee (RDC) checks and approves the selected candidates.
The university did something unexpected during the exam. It shut down the whole Gujarat University campus for the day. This was done for a smooth process and to avoid disturbances. It is seen first time in GU’s history.
For the Gujarat University PhD entrance exam, around 1,443 candidates registered, but 126 did not appear for the test.
In an unusual case, a murder accused from Surendranagar Jail also took the PhD entrance exam in science, but did not pass and scored only 45 marks.
According to the updated guidelines, those applying for PhD programs needed to register through the GCAS portal, but each university could still manage its entrance exam. Gujarat University administered exams in 700 subjects.
Although the pass percentage remained low and vacant seats are unlikely. That's because more than 500 students who passed the National Eligibility Test (NET) don't have to take the entrance exam and can get straight into the PhD programs.
Because of this, the number of qualified candidates is expected to match the number of available seats. The PhD admission process in various subjects will start once the Research Development Committee (RDC) completes its review.
