Government Pushes Quantum Education: 23 Institutions Selected for Teaching Facilities

NEW DELHI: As part of the National Quantum Mission, the Union government has approved the setting up of quantum teaching facilities/labs at 23 academic institutions across India. It is considering establishing an additional 100 educational facilities to provide modern instruction and research in the newest quantum technologies.

This was stated at a monthly meeting of secretaries of science ministries and departments co-chaired by the minister of science and technology, space and atomic energy Jitendra Singh. There was an evaluation of big science initiatives, forthcoming national science gatherings, and improved collaboration amongst the science ministries. Also present at the meeting was the principal scientific advisor to the Government, Ajay Kumar Sood.

Updates were also presented on the progress made by the space sector and preparation for the next PSLV mission later this year. Upcoming satellite launches and plans for the Navy's navigation satellite, likely to be launched by around May, were among the other discussions held to further bolster India's capability in space-based navigation.

The meeting also looked into details for the National Technology Day celebrations that will take place on May 11. A grand technology exhibition is expected to be organised in New Delhi on May 11-13, where the inventions from national research organisations and the startups that are being assisted by scientific ministries will be exhibited. 

More than 3000 stakeholders are expected to attend this event along with more than 500 technologies and innovations spread across theme-based sectors which will be showcased in the event to promote participation by industry and commercialisation of technology.

The meeting also addressed the review of manpower guidelines for project staff employed under scientific research programs. Considering the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) framework which has been put in place by notified norms, the Department of Science & Technology is also considering amending guidelines on manpower issued by them in the year 2020.
