Karnataka has secured the top position in India for postgraduate medical education, offering a record 10,092 NEET PG seats for the upcoming academic session. 

According to recent data presented by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the Lok Sabha, Maharashtra follows closely in second place with 9,216 seats, as the nation's total PG medical pool expands to an unprecedented 86,360 seats.

The official data highlights a sharp contrast in how medical education is structured across different states. While states like Maharashtra and Delhi maintain a high volume of government-funded positions, Karnataka’s top ranking is propelled heavily by its massive network of private institutions and deemed universities.

Centre Pushes Funding to Tackle Specialist Shortages

To counter the deficit of specialist doctors in rural areas, the Central Government is actively rolling out Phase III of its Centrally Sponsored Scheme. This initiative aims to add an additional 5,000 PG seats across India by 2028-29.

The financial support ceiling to upgrade state-run medical colleges has been increased to ?1.50 crore per seat. Meanwhile, authorities clarified that fees for NBEMS courses (DNB and diploma) will remain uniformly regulated at ?1.25 lakh per year nationwide to keep medical education accessible.
