Google and VTU Partner to Train 3 Lakh Karnataka Engineering Students in AI and Cloud Computing

In a major push toward making engineering graduates job-ready from day one, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) signed a monumental academic agreement with Google on Tuesday. The partnership aims to equip nearly 3 lakh students across 220 affiliated colleges in Karnataka with specialised skills in cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Bridging the Industry-Academia Skill Gap

The collaboration primarily focuses on rolling out comprehensive modules in AI, cloud computing, data science, and cybersecurity. Alongside student tracks, Google will also run robust faculty development programs to update classroom pedagogy in line with current corporate demands.

Heavily Discounted Learning Modules

Under the terms of the agreement, Google’s advanced curriculum, which normally carries a retail market valuation of approximately ?20,000, will be extended to VTU students for a highly subsidised rate of ?350. Crucially, the university confirmed that this fee is already covered under the pre-existing library consortium fees paid by the students, meaning they will face no out-of-pocket expenses this academic year.

Sanjay Jain, Head of Google for Education India, emphasised the necessity of the drive by highlighting that while modern youth are highly exposed to digital tools, very few possess the technical expertise to leverage AI effectively for advanced professional problem-solving.

Mega Tech Pacts with Qualcomm, Bharat Skills, and SEEL

The Google partnership forms part of a broader, multi-sector alliance spearheaded by VTU. The university simultaneously signed tech agreements with three other major tech and educational entities on Tuesday to overhaul its technical training infrastructure:

• Qualcomm Alliance: Partnering through its subsidiary Stem Lore Innovators LLP, Qualcomm will help establish a specialized Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Edge AI, IoT, product prototyping, and embedded systems.

• Bharat Skills Foundation: Initiating a phased roll-out of an engineering excellence centre worth ?20 crore.

• SEEL Company: Launching Simulation Enabled Experiential Learning (SEEL) out of Mysuru, granting students access to virtual cloud labs, GATE preparation modules, and a repository of over 1,900 industry-standard projects.

The combined multi-corporate framework represents one of the largest state-level academic upskilling collaborations, heavily pivoting Karnataka’s technical workforce away from traditional coding frameworks and directly into high-growth AI architecture roles.
