As a result of harsh weather conditions, the winter vacation of Delhi schools that was to be held in early January, has been extended to ensure the safety of students which is in line with the 2025, 26 calendar.

The Directorate of Education (DoE) stated on Thursday that schools in Delhi will remain closed till January 15, 2026. The city is undergoing a severe cold wave, dense fog, and poor visibility in the early mornings.

The DoE once again announced the winter break that was to be held from January 1 to January 15 according to the 2025, 26 calendar in order to protect students in view of the present weather situation. Following the break, normal classes will be held.

Recently, the temperature in Delhi dropped drastically and heavy fog disrupted the movement and created concern over sending children to school ten hours early.

Even with the official break, some parents claim on social media that certain private schools have reopened, posing a danger to young students during the cold.

Surya Yadav wrote on social media that some private schools in Delhi are open despite the Department of Education's (DoE) winter break notice. He asked for clarification, citing concerns about children's health.

Another user commented that private school students need protection from the cold weather, too.

Aman Suman posted on X, tagging the education department and seeking clarity on the school closure notice. He mentioned that even though newspapers reported school closures until January 15, schools are still open during the cold weather.

Delhi is experiencing harsh winter conditions with dense fog in the mornings and evenings.

On January 7, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a maximum temperature of 16.7°C, 2.3°C below the average for this time of year, and a minimum temperature of 8.6°C, 1.7°C above normal.

FAQ's
Delhi schools — including government and private institutions — have had their winter holidays extended till 15 January 2026 by the Directorate of Education (DoE) due to severe cold wave conditions and safety concerns, as part of the official academic calendar and cold weather directive.
Many parents have complained that some private schools are violating government directives — such as planning to reopen despite the holiday order, charging arbitrary or unapproved fee hikes, and allegedly mistreating students or families who raise objections, leading to protests and demands for regulatory action.
In response to parents’ grievances over private schools’ violations (like unapproved fee increases), the Delhi High Court upheld the fee regulation rules, requiring schools to form a fee regulation committee before hiking fees and mandating government-level oversight, strengthening protections for parents and students.
