Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA), situated in Thirumalaisamudram near Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, opened its doors in 1984 as Shanmugha College of Engineering. Because of its sustained research and scholastic output, the institution was declared a Deemed-to-be-University in 2001 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. Spread over 168 acres, SASTRA now delivers 154 programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels across Engineering, Management, Law, Sciences, Humanities and Education, while also running the off-campus Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre in Kumbakonam.
SASTRA's standing in various national and international lists speaks to its commitment to quality teaching and research. In the NIRF 2024 exercise, the university occupies the 28th position in the larger University category, the 38th slot in Engineering, the 14th spot in Law and an overall rank of 47. It also boasts NAAC A++ accreditation with a CGPA of 3.76, the highest score among deemed universities in Tamil Nadu. On the global stage, SASTRA appears in the 12011500 band of the THE World University Rankings for 2023. Twelve engineering programmes hold nine-year accreditation from the Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK, while Tata Consultancy Services has given the campus an A grade for industry readiness.
Is SASTRA University good? The institution earns praise for demanding coursework that mirrors contemporary industry needs. Its B.Tech disciplines, especially Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering, benefit from facilities acknowledged by the 2005 Washington Accord review as above global norms. Job placements remain robust; during 2021-22, 1,548 undergraduates secured positions at a median pay of 7.5 lakh per annum, with Amazon, TCS, and Microsoft leading the list. A 4,340-square-metre library housing 156,400 volumes and nearly 23,000 journals underpins ongoing research. Yet, some learners cite a narrow pool of core recruiters and hostel amenities that fall short of expectations.
SASTRA gained Deemed University status from the UGC in 2001-the first institution in Tamil Nadu to receive the accolade. Such autonomy permits constant curricular refreshment, prompting ventures like the SASTRA-BAJAJ Engineering Skills Training Centre, accredited by AICTE. Elevated to Category I under the 2018 Graded Autonomy framework, the university holds AICTE and Institution of Engineers (India) seals for its B.Tech programmes. Its research output has also earned recognition as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation from the Indian government.
