Some of the districts, like Agra, Prayagraj, Jhansi, Mirzapur, and Pilibhit, declared that schools in their respective areas would be shut during the time period. In most of these districts, the district magistrate, in consultation with the state's education department, released local holiday orders.
As per the instructions of the state government, the schools in different districts of Uttar Pradesh have been declared closed on March 5 and 6, 2026. The decision was conveyed to district administrations and departments of education, who were directed to treat these 2 days as holidays, considering the festival celebrations and local administrative factors.
I had already sent my child to school this morning when I got a message from the school authorities that read, As per the directive received from the U.P. Government, today and tomorrow, i.e. March 5 and 6, 2026, have been declared as holidays. It was quite confusing for many parents as the information was given after the students had already left for school, said a parent.
Officials stated that the shutdown applies to government schools, aided institutions, and many recognised private schools across the state. District officials handed notices to school managements, informing them that classes will be closed for these two days only. The announcement aims to keep students, teachers, and staff safe and comfortable during the festival when large crowds gather and people are on the move.
This comes at a time when people in the northern region of India are celebrating Holi, which is one of the country's most popular festivals. In several localities, people celebrate Holi beyond the main day of the festival due to their traditions and thus, the authorities have granted them extra time for the holiday.
