Continuing its spectacular global science streak, all four student representatives from India secured podium finishes at the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026. The prestigious academic event took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, concluding on 19 July 2026.
The Indian contingent brought home one gold medal and three silver medals. This stellar achievement follows India's recent clean sweeps at both the International Physics Olympiad (5 golds) and the International Chemistry Olympiad (4 golds) earlier this month.

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) confirmed the individual standings for the Indian team:
Bhavyaa Gunwal (Gold): Mahendragarh, Haryana.
Soumil Maity (Silver): Howrah, West Bengal.
Nishit Kalani (Silver): Pali, Rajasthan.
Anmol Kumar (Silver): Mansa, Punjab.
The IBO 2026 featured a highly competitive pool of 307 students hailing from 78 different countries. Organised by the Vilnius University Life Sciences Centre, the event pushed participants through intensive 12-hour testing conditions. This included a six-hour practical laboratory test across specialised fields like plant computational biology and molecular biochemistry, alongside an equally challenging six-hour theoretical research examination.
A total of 31 gold, 61 silver, and 91 bronze medals were awarded globally during the closing ceremony.
National Pride and Congratulations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to the young scientists, stating that the team's massive success on the global stage will greatly encourage India's youth to pursue advanced scientific fields. The academic team was selected and trained by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) - TIFR. This marks India's 26th appearance at the International Biology Olympiad, maintaining a historically exceptional strike rate.
