The Indian Institute of Statistics is a government institute that trains students in statistics and related sciences. ISI is headquartered in Kolkata with 4 other centers operating in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, and Tezpur. ISI was declared an Institute of National Significance by the Government of India in 1959. The institute is accredited by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MOSPI) and is recognized by AICTE. It offers full-time UG, PG, and short-term courses, including B.Stat, B.Math, M.Stat, and MS, among others. In addition, the institute also offers various scholarship and certificate programs.

Mahalanobis, the founder of ISI, was deeply influenced by the wisdom and guidance of Rabindranath Tagore and Brajendranath Seal. Under his leadership, the institute initiated and promoted the interaction of statistics with the natural and social sciences to further the role of statistics as a key technology in explaining the twin aspects: its general applicability and its dependence on other disciplines for its own development. The institute is now considered one of the world's leading training and research centers in computer science, statistics, quantitative economics, and related sciences.

The Indian Institute of Statistics has a large and diverse group of highly qualified and experienced faculty. Each department has a HOD, professors, and associate professors.

SI offers two undergraduate programs viz. Bachelor of Statistics (Honours) (B.Stat) and Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) (B.Math), seven graduate programs viz. Master of Statistics (M. Stat), Master of Mathematics (M. Math), Master of Science in Quantitative Economics (MSQE), Master of Science in Library and Information Science (MSLIS), Master of Science in Quality Management (MSQMS), Master of Technology in Information Technology (MTech – CS), Master of Technology in Cryptology and Security (MTech-CrS) and Master of Technology in Quality, Reliability, and Operations Research (MTech – QROR).

ISI also offers four PG degree programs viz. Graduate Diploma in Agricultural and Rural Management with Statistical Methods [PGDARSMA], Graduate Diploma in Statistical Methods and Analysis [PGDSMA], Graduate Diploma in Business Analysis [PGDBA] and PG Diploma in Applied Statistics.

How to register?

Applicants who wish to be admitted to the institute must follow the steps indicated:

• Register in the Admission Portal on the website.

• Select the course and the center where this course is available

• Submit the required details

• Submit a scanned photo, signature and required documents

• Pay Rs 1250 (male applicants) or Rs 750 (female applicants) application fee by credit/debit card/net banking.

Required documents:

• Scanned copy of passport if you are not Indian.

• Score sheets/score cards or equivalent to standard X.

• valid certificates of caste (SC/ ST/ OBC-NCL) and/or disability, if applicable

Admission procedure

The ISI organizes an entrance examination each year for admission to its various courses. The selection is based on the marks obtained by the candidates in the entrance examination. Results are usually announced around May.

• Applicants need to visit the official website and click on ISI Admission Result.

• After entering the ISI application number and password or the ISI registration number and date of birth, the screen will show whether the candidate has been approved or not.

• Candidates should download/save the scorecard for future reference.

Facilities at the campus

• Library: The ISI Library covers an area of more than 56,000 square feet and is a ten-story building. It is one of the most resourceful libraries in the state with books on mathematics, statistics and similar subjects.

• Hostel: ISI Kolkata offers children's hostel facilities to its students. The hostel offers all the basic amenities to its residents.

• Dining room: The institute offers good and healthy food in its dining room to both day residents and residents.
