UGC Issues Warning on Fake University in Kerala Offering Franchise Degrees

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a warning to students regarding a fraudulent university in Kerala. That's providing unauthorised degrees via franchise agreements. The UGC advises students to take caution before enrolling in any programs at this university.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified the International Islamic University of Prophetic Medicine (IIUPM which is located in Calicut (Kozhikode), Kerala as a fraudulent university.

This university also lacks the accreditation required to grant degrees. The UGC has included IIUPM in its register of unapproved universities. According to the UGC Act only legitimately established universities are authorised to use the title “university.”

Another institution, Emversity is located in Bengaluru (Karnataka) has also raised concerns. It has been providing degree programs through partnerships and collaborations with private and deemed universities.

The UGC has made it clear that private or deemed universities are not permitted to establish off-campus centres, franchises, or partnerships without prior approval. Those degrees earned through such programs are not eligible for employment or further education.

Why Is This Important to Students?

  • Fake degrees are worthless and can be dismissed by employers and educational institutions.

  • Attending unaccredited universities leads to wasted time and money.

  • A degree from an unrecognised university can affect your career.

How must students act?

  • Verify Accreditation: Go to ugc.gov.in to check if the university is approved.

  • Watch out for deceptive ads that claim to offer fast degrees.

  • Keep Updated:  Check official UGC announcements, as they update the list of unaccredited universities every year.

  • Report Any Suspicious Schools: Let the UGC know if you see any potentially fraudulent educational institutions.

UGC Taking Strict Action

They've already taken action against several fake universities in India. This year, they've flagged over 20 such universities. The UGC is also warning private universities to stick to the rules regarding how they operate and stay transparent.
