Delhi Education Budget 2026: Free Cycles for Class 9 Girls, Laptops for Class 10 Toppers

The Delhi government plans to distribute free bicycles to nearly 13,0000 girls in Class 9 and above attending government schools. This is according to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta who announced in Tuesday’s budget presentation. The education sector received the largest budget allocation of 19, 326 crore for 2026 27. And showed a minor increase from the previous year when the budget allocated 19 291 crore for 2025 26.

Gupta reported that the bicycle program requires 90 crore to achieve its goal of keeping students in school. She explained that transportation difficulties affect girls who attend Delhi government schools. This results in their school dropout.

The program will award laptops to students who achieve top academic results in Class 10 will receive 10 crore in funding.

The education budget now accounts for 18.64% of total expenditures. This represents a minor decline from last year's 19% allocation.

The budget includes funding to build better school facilities. It will help decrease student dropout rates. The implementing regulations for private play schools require them to provide financial support to skill development programs.

The budget sets 200 crore for school facility upgrades and new school construction. And the existing schools will receive 275 crore for their expansion needs.

Gupta reported that the government allocated 5 crore for medical room construction in every government school. She expressed surprise that medical facilities had not been established in Delhi government schools until this moment.

Gupta reported that about 7000 classrooms will have smart boards installed by 2025. The 2026 27 academic year will establish 8777 smart classrooms which will ultimately expand to 21000 total classrooms. The budget includes a financial allocation of 150 crore.

The government will allocate 50 crore for the construction of sports hostels and playgrounds and swimming pools which will benefit all development areas. The government will allocate 2 crore to establish crèche facilities in offices. They are also providing certified caregivers for these locations. 

Gupta explained that private play schools have operated without proper regulations so a Private Play Schools Policy will be introduced to guarantee complete child development. The government will develop both a shared library system and a digital library framework.

The government will establish rehabilitation centres at its stadiums while introducing a new policy for private sports academies which will regulate their operations. This initiative is designed to improve sports facilities for government school students. The reason is to establish new business opportunities for private companies.

The proposed budget of 1.5 crore will fund pedagogical innovations and exposure visits for CM Shri Schools.
