In February 2026, the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) discontinued the level teacher eligibility test (BTET) for Classes 1–8. From the academic year 2026, BSEB has made it mandatory for aspirants seeking teaching positions in primary and middle schools to qualify for the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET).

BTET eligibility remains valid for the candidates who qualified for BTET in 2017 or hold lifetime certificates. These candidates can apply for the upcoming vacancies. The official website link is onlinebpsc.bihar.gov.in to get more details.

BSEB 2026: STET Status

The State Teacher Eligibility Test (STET) will be applicable for candidates who wish to teach higher grades in government schools. The state-level eligibility test for elementary teachers is not acceptable, but STET still operates for hiring secondary and senior secondary teachers within Bihar.

  • STET Paper 1: Required for Secondary teachers (Classes 9–10).

  • STET Paper 2: Required for Senior Secondary teachers (Classes 11–12).

  • Elementary-level tests phased out: The state test for Classes 1–8 has been discontinued.

CTET Paper 1 is mandatory for Classes 1–5, while CTET Paper 2 is required for Classes 6–8. The state education department made this shift because CBSE CTET is fulfilling the same objectives.

CTET qualifying candidates are eligible to apply for BPSC TRE 4.0 recruitments, which are scheduled from September 22-27, 2026.

FAQ's
No. The Bihar Teacher Eligibility Test (BTET) has been discontinued by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) for recruitment of elementary teachers (Classes 1–8). The state will no longer hold its own eligibility test.
From now on, Bihar will use the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) — conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) — as the main qualifying exam for selecting teachers for government schools at the elementary level (Classes 1–8).
The move aims to align Bihar’s recruitment with the national eligibility standard and simplify the process. By using CTET, candidates qualifying a nationally conducted exam will be eligible for Bihar teacher posts, which also matches the practice in other states.
