UGC Guidelines 2026 Permit 1-year PG Program Under NEP 2020

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the launch of one-year Postgraduate (PG) programmes through Online and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) modes. This landmark decision aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and aims to provide maximum flexibility to students across India.

Key Highlights of the New UGC Guidelines

• 4-Year UG Requirement: Only students who have completed a four-year bachelor's degree with honours or research can opt for the 1-year PG course.

• 3-Year UG Exclusion: Students with a traditional three-year bachelor's degree must continue with the regular two-year PG format.

• Strict Institutional Criteria: Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) may offer these courses only if they already have approval for the corresponding two-year conventional or online PG programme.

• Statutory Body Approval: Universities must obtain explicit clearance from their respective Boards of Studies and Academic Councils before launching these programmes.

• Professional Course Status: Professional degrees like MBA, MCA, and PGDM will remain governed by their respective regulatory bodies, such as AICTE.
