The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) that the Centre rolled out endeavours to enhance employability among young citizens and provide workplace exposure.
One crore young Indians are intended to receive internship opportunities for a period of five years through the PMIS. Selected trainees are offered employment with different companies where they receive training that enhances their employment chances.
The internship program under the pilot phase commenced in 2024-25 with internship opportunities for 1.25 lakh students.
It is for youth, not employed in full-time jobs. Candidates trained in ITIs and skill centres are eligible to apply for the scheme. But, candidates who have graduated from institutions like IITs and IIMs are not eligible for the scheme, along with candidates having degrees like CA and CMA.
The internship period will be for 12 months. During at least fifty per cent of the period, there will be actual work experience and skill development.
PM Internship Scheme Stipend
Under this scheme, a stipend amount is provided to the interns monthly by the government. In addition to this, the partnering organisations will provide supplementary assistance to the interns through their CSR programs.
The selected candidates are also provided with travel and other incidental expenses, besides the monthly stipends. Life insurance will be provided to the interns through government programs.
The eligible candidates may apply online through the official portal, namely, the PM Internship Scheme portal. To apply, candidates must do the following-

Submit their personal and educational details.
Upload all the required documents.
Mention the sector/companies where they wish to work.
Submit the application form online.
A multilingual helpline 1800-116-090 has also been established by the government for candidates having issues during the registration and application process.
