AICTE Approves Colleges; Computer Applications Gets 3.65 Lakh Seats

The AICTE approves colleges, adding 749,872 seats to India’s technical education capacity, according to AICTE data.

The biggest share of this expansion has gone to computer applications, which accounts for 3,959 newly approved institutions and 365,848 seats. The figures point to growing capacity in computer applications, IT, and management-related higher education.

AICTE College Approvals: Computer Applications Leads

Computer Applications emerged as the largest category among the newly approved institutions. Management followed closely, while Engineering and Technology recorded a much smaller expansion.

Together, computer applications and management account for more than 7.13 lakh newly approved seats, making these two areas the main drivers of the latest AICTE expansion.

94% New Seats at Undergraduate Level

According to the figures provided, around 705,408 of the 749,872 new seats, or nearly 94%, are at the undergraduate level. Postgraduate programmes account for 29,974 seats, while diploma programmes add 14,490 seats.

This expansion gives students more options in areas such as computer applications, information technology, business management, and other career-focused programmes.

Engineering Expansion Remains Limited

Engineering and Technology saw a comparatively modest increase, with 107 newly approved institutions and 34,045 seats.

The difference is significant when compared with computer applications and management. Computer applications alone added more than 10 times the number of new seats added under engineering and technology.

AICTE Data Shows Change in Technical Education Expansion

The latest figures also differ sharply from the previous academic year. In 2023-24, management recorded 105 newly approved institutions with 13,020 seats, while MCA accounted for 53 institutions and 4,890 seats, based on the figures cited in the AICTE data.

The latest approvals therefore indicate a much larger expansion in computer applications and management education.

For students, the development could mean more choices for courses such as BCA, MCA, computer applications, IT management, MBA, and other technology-focused programmes. However, students should check AICTE approval, university recognition, programme accreditation, fees, curriculum, and placement records before choosing a college.
